Your Main Door Sets the Tone for Everything
If there is one Vastu decision we would never let a client rush, it is the main entrance. In Vastu Shastra, the main door is the single most important element of a home β the "mouth" through which energy, opportunities, and prosperity enter each day. Placed and maintained well, it draws positive energy in; placed poorly, it can quietly hold back the fortune of an otherwise beautiful home. So if you are building or buying in Nepal, this is the one detail worth slowing down for.
Best Directions for the Main Entrance
The most auspicious directions for a main door, in order of preference, are:
- North-East: the most sacred and beneficial β brings spiritual and material growth.
- North: governed by Kubera β excellent for wealth and career.
- East: the direction of the rising sun β brings health and positivity.
- West: acceptable and good for gains, especially the north-west portion.
Every facing direction has a favourable "pada" (a zone along the wall divided into segments). Even south-facing homes have an auspicious entrance pada β the direction of the house is less important than placing the door in the correct pada within that wall.
The Concept of Padas
In Vastu, each wall is divided into 9 padas (segments). Each pada is ruled by a deity, and some bring prosperity while others bring difficulties. A qualified Vastu consultant identifies the exact auspicious pada for your specific facing direction. As a general guide:
- North wall: 5th pada (from the north-east) β Kubera.
- East wall: 5th pada (from the north-east) β Indra.
- West wall: 3rd pada (from the north-west) β favourable for gains.
- South wall: 4th pada (from the south-east) β the safe zone for a south entrance.
Zones to Avoid for the Main Door
- The exact corners of the building.
- The negative padas of each wall (a consultant can pinpoint these).
- A door directly facing another door of a neighbouring house, or a T-junction road (Vedha).
- A main door directly aligned with the back door in a straight line β energy rushes straight out.
Main Door Design Guidelines
- The main door should be the largest door in the house.
- It should open inward and clockwise, into the home.
- Use good-quality wood; avoid metal or fibre main doors where possible.
- Provide a threshold (deurali) β a small raised step at the entrance.
- The door should not make a creaking sound β keep hinges oiled.
- Ensure the door is free of cracks, damage, or peeling paint.
Auspicious Enhancements
- Decorate the entrance with a Swastik, Om, or toran (door hanging).
- Place a brass or copper nameplate on the right side of the door.
- Keep the entrance well-lit at night.
- Add a pair of healthy plants on either side of the door.
- Keep the area clean β remove shoe racks, dustbins, and clutter from directly in front of the door.
- A rangoli or auspicious floor pattern at the entrance welcomes positive energy.
Things to Avoid at the Entrance
- A shoe rack, dustbin, or broom visible right at the main door.
- A dead-end wall directly facing the door as you enter.
- A toilet directly facing or above the main entrance.
- Thorny plants (like cactus) at the entrance.
- A dark, cramped, or cluttered entrance passage.
The Bottom Line
Because your main door shapes the energy of everything behind it, getting its direction, pada, and design right is one of the most rewarding investments you can make in your home. And if your entrance is not perfectly placed, don't worry β targeted remedies can meaningfully improve the flow of positive energy. At VastuVeda Designs, we pinpoint the exact auspicious entrance for your plot's orientation and design it into a home that is both beautiful and energetically balanced.
