Best Direction for Kitchen According to Vastu

The kitchen must be in the southeast zone — the Agni (fire) corner ruled by Lord Agni. The southeast direction harnesses the energy of the morning sun and supports the fire element essential for cooking and nourishment.

If southeast is not possible, northwest is the second-best option. Never place the kitchen in the northeast (sacred Brahma zone), north (Kubera's wealth zone), or southwest (stability zone).

Cooking Platform and Stove Placement

• The cooking platform should be in the southeast corner of the kitchen.
• The person cooking should face east while preparing food — this is considered the most auspicious direction.
• The gas cylinder/stove should not be directly in front of or visible from the main entrance.
• Avoid placing the stove under a window or beam.

Kitchen Vastu for Nepal's Cooking Culture

Nepali kitchens traditionally include a puja niche, dal-bhat cooking vessels, and a separate area for the gas chulha. Vastu recommends keeping the puja niche in the east or northeast corner of the kitchen. The sink (water element) should be in the northeast — never adjacent to the stove (fire element) — with a gap or divider between them.

Yellow, orange, and red tones support the Agni energy in the kitchen. Avoid blue, black, or grey in the kitchen as they represent the water element and dampen the fire energy. Granite countertops are ideal; avoid dark stone in the northeast zone.
