An Office Is a Machine for Decisions
Whether it is a two-desk consultancy in Putalisadak or a full floor in a corporate tower, an office has one job: help people think clearly, work together and close business. Office Vastu assigns each function to the zone that suits its energy — leadership to the stable south-west, money to the north, fire (servers, pantry) to the south-east. Applied sensibly, it produces a floor plan that feels ordered and works better.
The Owner's / Director's Cabin
- Place the cabin in the south-west — the zone of stability and authority.
- The owner should sit facing north or east, with a solid wall behind them (never glass or a window at the back).
- A heavy, rectangular desk suits the role; avoid sitting under an exposed beam.
- Important documents and the safe belong in the south-west of the cabin, the safe opening north.
Staff Desks & Workstations
- Staff work best facing north or east — associated with alertness and fresh thinking.
- Avoid desks where staff sit with their backs to the main door of the room.
- Marketing and sales teams suit the north-west — the movement zone that keeps them (and the goods) moving.
- Managers within open floors sit towards the south and west, junior staff towards the north and east.
Accounts, Cash & the North
- The accounts department belongs in the north — Kubera's zone of wealth.
- The cash box/safe opens towards the north; financial records stay in the north or south-west (secured).
- Keep the north zone clean, uncluttered and never used as a dumping store.
Reception, Meeting Rooms & Support Areas
- Reception: the east or north-east — bright, welcoming, with the receptionist facing north or east.
- Conference/meeting rooms: the north-west works well — the air zone supports discussion and quick decisions.
- Pantry/canteen: the south-east (fire zone); never the north-east.
- Server room / electrical panels: the south-east, well-ventilated.
- Toilets: the north-west or west; never the north-east or centre.
- Keep the centre (Brahmasthan) open — a circulation area or lounge, not a cabin or store.
Common Office Vastu Mistakes
- The boss's cabin in the north-east — the light zone gets crushed by authority, and the leader feels unstable.
- Staff facing south all day, or facing walls in dark corners.
- The pantry or toilet next to (or above) the accounts area.
- Dead files, broken chairs and e-waste hoarded in the north or north-east.
- A cluttered, dark reception — the first impression zone left last in priority.
The Bottom Line
Put leadership in the south-west facing north-east, accounts in the north, movement roles in the north-west, fire functions in the south-east, and keep the centre and north-east open. Most of it is furniture arrangement, not construction — an office can usually be realigned over one weekend. At VastuVeda Designs we plan office layouts and fit-outs where Vastu, workflow and Nepal's real floor plates work together, for everything from startups to corporate floors.
