The Brahmasthan is the central zone of a house — the middle 3×3 block when the plan is divided into a 9×9 grid. Ruled by Lord Brahma, it is the energy core of the home and should be kept open, clean and lightly loaded. The central zone is considered the most energetically sensitive part of a home, from which energy radiates to all the surrounding rooms. Traditional Nepali and Newari houses expressed this with a central chowk (courtyard). Keeping the Brahmasthan open allows the home to "breathe", while filling it with heavy or impure elements is believed to unbalance the entire house.
Avoid a toilet, bathroom, kitchen, fireplace, heavy staircase (especially spiral), structural pillar, store room, heavy furniture, or an underground tank/pit exactly at the centre. These pollute or overload the Brahmasthan. A toilet in the centre is one of the most serious Vastu defects, as it places waste at the home's energy core; fire (kitchen) and heavy loads (stairs, pillars, tanks) similarly disturb the balance. If an existing home has one of these in the centre and it cannot be moved, keep the surrounding area as clean, open and light as possible and consult a Vastu expert for specific remedies.
No. A staircase — especially a spiral one — in the centre burdens the Brahmasthan and is considered a Vastu defect. Staircases belong in the south, west or south-west of the home, away from the centre. The centre should stay light and open, but a staircase is one of the heaviest, most active elements in a home, so placing it there directly contradicts the Brahmasthan principle. When you plan the structure, keep the stair core in the heavier zones (south/west/south-west) and let the centre remain a courtyard, double-height space or clear circulation area instead.
Even without a full courtyard, keep the centre as an open living room, lobby or double-height space, route stairs and plumbing to the edges, and align columns so beams frame the centre rather than land on it. A skylight above keeps it light. On compact urban plots a literal open-to-sky courtyard is not always possible, but the spirit of the Brahmasthan can still be honoured. Reserve the central 3×3 zone for open, everyday-use space rather than a bathroom, store or stair, and design the structural grid so no heavy column or beam lands dead-centre. A well-placed skylight or internal light-well keeps the heart of the home bright even when space is tight — an approach we use often for Nepali homes.
