Shade the summer sun with overhangs and louvres, use thermal mass (brick/concrete) with night ventilation, arrange cross-ventilation on opposite walls, and insulate or shade the roof. Together these keep rooms comfortable without machinery. The biggest heat gains in a Nepali home are direct sun through unshaded glass and heat radiating from an uninsulated roof. Fix those two first: size overhangs so summer sun never reaches the glass, and insulate or shade the roof so the top floor stops acting as an oven. Then use the building's mass and cross-ventilation — flushing cool night air through the house — to hold comfortable temperatures through the day.
Yes. Nepal's heavy monsoon makes roof rainwater harvesting very effective — stored water can cover flushing, washing and gardening, cutting reliance on municipal supply and tankers, while recharge pits help restore the falling groundwater table. A simple system collects roof runoff into a storage tank via a first-flush diverter and filter, supplying non-potable needs directly and, with treatment, potable use too. Where storage is limited, a recharge pit directs rainwater back into the ground to lift the local water table — increasingly important as Kathmandu's groundwater falls. The payback comes from lower tanker bills and greater water security through the dry season.
For passive comfort, orient main living spaces and larger glazing roughly towards the south, so the low winter sun warms the rooms while overhangs block the high summer sun. Soft north light suits study and work areas. Solar orientation and Vastu often point in compatible directions, but they answer different questions — the sun's path is a physical fact, while Vastu adds its own directional logic. In Kathmandu's latitude, southern exposure with correctly sized overhangs gives free winter warmth and easy summer shading. Where the plot or Vastu constrains orientation, shading devices, glazing choices and room placement can still deliver most of the comfort benefit.
The core passive strategies — orientation, shading, ventilation, thermal mass — cost little or nothing extra when designed from the start; they are mainly about planning, not products. Add-ons like solar water heating and rainwater harvesting have a small upfront cost with fast payback. The misconception is that "green" means expensive imported technology. In reality most of the benefit comes from free design decisions — which way rooms face, how big the overhangs are, where the windows go — made before construction. Retrofitting these later is costly, which is exactly why they should be designed in from day one. Only the optional systems carry a capital cost, and those are chosen to pay for themselves through lower running bills.
