Parts of it are grounded in environmental logic — sun path, light, ventilation and drainage — that align with modern climate-responsive design. Other parts are symbolic and spiritual, a matter of belief rather than physics. A good architect uses the functional logic and treats the rest as the client's choice. It is more useful to separate Vastu into two layers than to label the whole thing scientific or not. The environmental layer — orient to the sun, light the north-east, ventilate, drain correctly — is sound building sense for the subcontinent's climate and overlaps strongly with passive design. The symbolic layer is a belief system, and whether to follow it is a personal decision. We apply the first as good practice and respect the second as the client's call.

Can I build a modern house without following Vastu at all?

Absolutely. A good architect can design a fully modern, safe and climate-smart home with no Vastu input, and you lose nothing by it. Vastu should always be optional — never a requirement imposed on a client who does not want it. The essentials of a great home — structural safety, functional planning, natural light, ventilation, proportion and a climate-smart envelope — are all independent of Vastu. Many outstanding buildings worldwide follow no Vastu at all. If you prefer a purely modern approach, a competent firm will design to engineering and climate principles alone, and the result can be every bit as comfortable and beautiful as a Vastu-guided home.

What happens when Vastu conflicts with good design or the plot?

Structure and safety are never compromised, and function comes before symbolism. Within those limits, a skilled architect finds a layout that honours your most important Vastu priorities without hurting how the house works or looks — and uses remedies where perfection is impossible. On a constrained plot, no design achieves perfect Vastu everywhere, so prioritisation is the real skill. The high-impact placements — entrance, kitchen, master bedroom, water and toilets — carry most of the weight and are worth optimising; minor conflicts elsewhere can be handled with accepted remedies. What we will not do is weaken the structure, force a dysfunctional plan, or ruin the façade to satisfy a symbolic rule. Good architecture and meaningful Vastu can almost always coexist when priorities are set honestly.
