A tropical / climate-modern approach — deep overhangs, louvre screens, cross-ventilation, courtyards and shaded glazing — suits Nepal's strong sun and monsoon far better than a fully glazed, sealed "glass box" that overheats. Style should follow climate, not the other way round. Kathmandu has intense sun, cool nights and a heavy monsoon, so overhangs, shading and ventilation matter more than any particular aesthetic. You can achieve a minimalist, Newari-fusion or industrial look while still being climate-smart — the key is that orientation, overhangs and ventilation are designed first, and the styling is layered on afterwards.
Yes — quality exposed brick is local, warm, low-maintenance and looks quietly premium. It has become a signature of good contemporary Nepali homes, but it requires well-fired bricks, neat pointing and proper detailing to keep out rain. Exposed brickwork removes the recurring cost of exterior paint and ages gracefully, but it is unforgiving of poor workmanship — uneven bricks, sloppy joints or inadequate weather detailing show immediately and let water in. It works best with generous overhangs and a considered bond pattern, and pairs well with textured plaster, timber and stone for contrast on the façade.
Prioritise natural light (a light well or courtyard), keep the material palette restrained, use good proportions and clean lines, and invest the design effort in the front façade — the face seen most. Openness and light read as "spacious" more than raw floor area. On a compact plot, perceived space comes from light, sightlines and restraint rather than square footage. A double-height void, a courtyard or a stair-top skylight pulls daylight deep into the plan; continuous flooring and fewer partitions make rooms flow; and a calm palette of two or three materials stops the eye from feeling cluttered. These moves cost little but transform how a modest house feels to live in.
It reinterprets traditional Kathmandu Valley elements — exposed brick, timber-framed windows inspired by tikijhya, sloped tiled roofs and carved accents — using clean, modern massing and construction. Done well, it feels rooted in local heritage rather than imported. The aim is continuity, not pastiche: borrowing the material warmth and human scale of Newari architecture while using contemporary structure, glazing and planning. The best examples use exposed brick and timber selectively as accents against clean modern volumes, rather than copying temple ornament literally. For many Nepali families it offers a distinctive identity that mass-produced "modern" boxes lack.
