The Directional Debate in Nepal
When buying or building a home in Nepal, the direction your main entrance faces is one of the most debated Vastu considerations. Families consult elders, priests, and architects alike — often getting conflicting advice.
The truth is that both north-facing and south-facing plots can yield excellent homes when Vastu principles are applied correctly.
North-Facing Houses
North-facing houses are considered highly auspicious in Vastu Shastra. The north direction is governed by Kuber, the deity of wealth. Key benefits:
- Abundance of natural light through the day in Nepal's subtropical climate
- The main entrance positioned in the north or north-east corner attracts prosperity
- Ideal for living rooms and study rooms on the north side
South-Facing Houses
South-facing houses often get an unfair reputation. In reality, Vastu permits south-facing homes when the entrance is placed at specific pada (zone) positions along the south wall — specifically the 4th pada from the south-east corner.
- The living room works well on the south or south-west side
- Place a heavy structure (compound wall or water tank) at the south-west to anchor earth energy
- Avoid placing the kitchen in the south-east corner of a south-facing home
What Really Matters
Rather than fixating on the direction of the plot, focus on: (1) the exact location of the main entrance on the wall, (2) the placement of heavy and light rooms, and (3) the flow of natural light and air. Our Vastu consultation service covers all of these in detail for your specific plot.
