1. The 'Vastu-Vertical' Layout
When horizontal space is limited, every inch must serve a dual purpose. In Kathmandu's context, the ground floor often falls victim to dampness and lack of sunlight due to neighboring tall buildings. We recommend elevating the primary living spaces. Using the split-level design technique allows you to create distinct zones without the need for thick dividing walls, which consume precious inches.

A modern take on the traditional Newari Chowk, a small 3x3 foot glass-topped shaft can bring sunlight deep into the ground floor, reducing electricity costs and improving the mental well-being of residents.

Building in Nepal requires navigating fluctuating material costs. For small plots, using Lightweight Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks can be a game-changer. They are lighter than traditional red bricks, reducing the dead load on the structure and potentially lowering the cost of the RCC frame. Furthermore, using large-format porcelain tiles (NPR 150-250 per sq. ft.) rather than marble can provide a luxury finish without the bulk or the maintenance burden.

In a 2.5 aana home, the roof is your only 'yard'. Instead of just a water tank placement, we design these spaces as Sky Gardens. By using waterproof membranes and lightweight soil mix, you can grow organic vegetables—a necessity given Kathmandu's rising market prices—while providing a thermal buffer for the floors below.
